The Uniquely Compelling Quality of Lee Epting

Lee is one of several generous entrepreneurs who’ve made time to chat with me recently. Having been one of the trailblazers in the executive suite of big tech for many years, she now helps women in the corporate world get in touch with their limiting behaviours so that they can elevate themselves to be the best version of who they are.

Lee’s Uniquely Compelling Quality (UCQ) was immediately palpable to me, like the magical voice of a songbird calling out its signature tune. I noted down what I felt, 'A strong sense of where the line should be drawn'. I love making that connection because it’s the feeling of authenticity. It rings true and it’s powerful. However, that wasn’t the best thing that came out of our call. More of that in a moment.

Lee harnesses her UCQ by giving the people she guides the tools and insight to understand how to navigate the corporate world, the importance of boundaries and how to make space to expand into creativity and not get blocked by the logic of our past.

Her toolbox is brimming with useful tips, all set out in her wonderful book ‘Composure’.  Lee understands the importance of boundaries - of course - for her it’s inbuilt.

Our language reflects just how physical mental boundaries are when we talk of how someone ‘overstepped the mark’.  We’ve all experienced the sensation of someone talking to us when too close and invading our space. All we want is to move backwards (or get them to!).

Often our boundary lines are crossed when someone says something that triggers us. Lee referenced the boardroom meeting where the big boss might say something to us, in front of everyone, that gets the pulse rate racing, such as,  “You’re not thinking big enough here”.

The cortisol starts rushing through our body and maybe we freeze. Certainly, our creativity is under pressure. Likely, we contract energetically.

So how do we reestablish our boundaries? Lee recommends counting to three and replying in a manner that opens up the dynamic for the benefit of all. Something like, “That's a really interesting comment. You know, when the team looked at this, we thought we were thinking big. But obviously, you don't think we are, so tell me, how would you propose we might be thinking bigger about this?”

Tools like these get the good stuff flowing.

When we’re in our heads being triggered can easily knock us off balance and let in self-doubt. When counting to three, if we know our UCQ, we come back into the body and get our feet on the ground and onto our most secure foundations, from there we can best navigate how to move forward.

The cherry on the cake of our conversation was the final felt message I got from Lee. She loves what she does and the help she gives those she works with and it was tangible.  Our UCG is part DNA, part familial and part divine gift. With Lee the feeling of that love she has was both tangible and enduring - I felt it clear as day and it stayed with me for a while after our conversation. That’s the divine element expressed.

This is the big payoff.

When we find our UCQ and live it, we love what we do, it benefits others and it speaks to us at the highest level.
